What does 'Ethical Sustainable Practice' mean?

At a Glance

"Ethical Sustainable Practice" is the philosophical backbone of the Counsellor CPD Library. It means CPD that keeps your practice ethical, and your career sustainable, by expanding the range of clients you can competently work with.

Ethical

Ethics is woven into every lecture from the start — not added on as a separate module, not bolted on at the end. Whether the topic is trauma, online practice, supervision, or working with children, ethical considerations are part of the conversation throughout.

Sustainable

This is the part that surprises people. "Sustainable" here is not about the environment. It's about your practice.

A sustainable counselling practice is one that can endure — both ethically and commercially. And that depends on the breadth of what you are competent to work with.

Why competence breadth matters

Without specialist CPD in areas like trauma, addiction, or eating disorders, you cannot ethically work with those client presentations. That means:

  • Your potential client base is limited — you must refer out when something unfamiliar walks through the door
  • Your income ceiling is constrained by your competence boundary
  • You are vulnerable in a profession that asks more of you every year

With quality CPD, you expand your competence safely. You see more diverse presentations. You build a practice that can support you for the long term.

The reframe

CPD is often experienced as a cost — a hidden tax on being a counsellor. The shift here is to see it as an investment in your practice's sustainability.

Or as Ken Kelly puts it: the client can only go as far as the counsellor can.
