I'm based outside the UK — is the course relevant to me?

At a Glance

Yes — international counsellors are welcome on the course. The core skills, frameworks, and practical considerations of online and telephone counselling largely transfer across borders. Some legal and regulatory details are UK-specific, but the substance of the course is internationally relevant.

What translates universally

Most of what the course teaches is universal:

  • The therapeutic dynamics of working remotely — these are the same wherever you practise
  • The ethical principles of online practice — confidentiality, consent, boundaries, contracting
  • The practical skills — setting up your environment, managing technology, working across modalities
  • Risk and safeguarding considerations — the principles transfer, even if the specific frameworks vary
  • Reflective practice as you develop your online style

What's UK-specific

A few things are framed in a UK context. You may need to adapt them to your own setting:

  • Professional body references — the course is mapped to BACP and NCPS standards. Recognition by your own body needs to be checked separately.
  • UK GDPR — the data protection content references UK law specifically. The principles transfer to other regulatory frameworks (e.g. EU GDPR) but the legal details vary.
  • Some safeguarding and legal considerations — the principles transfer; the specific legal frameworks are UK-focused.

Recognition by your own body

Counselling Tutor's certificates are widely accepted internationally — but rules vary by country and by professional body. Before enrolling, please check with your own body about how UK-issued CPD is recognised in your context. We can supply additional information to support a CPD submission if it helps.

Practical considerations

  • Time zones don't matter — the course is fully self-paced and there are no live sessions
  • Internet and equipment — you'll need a stable connection and a computer suitable for video calls (for the buddy work)
  • Buddy partner — international members find their own buddy from anywhere in their network. This could be a colleague, peer, or fellow practitioner you already know. There's also an optional Facebook group connected to the course where some members connect with others — but it's not required.
  • English language fluency — spoken and written English is essential for the course materials and for the buddy work
