I'm based outside the UK — can I take this course?

At a Glance

Yes — international counsellors are welcome on the course. The materials are based on UK professional practice, but the core supervision skills, theories, and frameworks are universal and transferable.

What translates universally

Most of what the course teaches travels well across borders:

  • The Shohet and Hawkins Seven-Eyed Model — used internationally and across helping professions, not just UK counselling
  • Supervision skills — contracting, the supervisory relationship, working with parallel process, providing challenge and support
  • The reflective and reflexive practitioner stance — universal in supervision practice
  • Online and telephone supervision competences — increasingly important wherever you practise
  • Group supervision principles
  • Self-care, gatekeeping, and ethical responsibility

What's UK-specific

A few things are framed in a UK context. You may need to adapt them to your own setting:

  • Professional body references — the course is mapped to BACP and NCPS standards. Recognition by your own professional body needs to be checked separately
  • UK GDPR — the legal framework for data is UK-specific
  • Some legislation references — particularly around equality, diversity, and safeguarding
  • CPD requirements — vary by country and by professional body

On recognition by your own body

Library certificates from Counselling Tutor are widely accepted internationally — but rules vary by country and by professional body. Before enrolling, please check with your own body about how UK-issued supervision training is recognised in your context. We can supply additional information to support a CPD submission if it helps.

Practical considerations

  • Time zones — live sessions run on UK time (10am–4pm). If you are in a very different time zone, please factor in whether you can attend full-day live sessions at those hours
  • Internet and equipment — you'll need a stable connection capable of streaming live video, plus camera and microphone
  • English language fluency — spoken and written English is essential for full participation in live sessions and assessments

A note from our existing international members

The course has graduated supervisors from Ireland, Australia, India, Kenya, Botswana, the United States, and many other countries. Many tell us the course is more useful and more accessible than locally available training. International students have completed the course successfully and gone on to supervise locally with confidence.
