How is the course delivered?

At a Glance

The course is delivered entirely online, using a flipped classroom model. You complete self-directed learning between live sessions, then live tutor-led days are spent on demonstration, practice, and feedback — not on lecture.

The two halves

Self-directed learning (between sessions)

Around 8–9 hours per week of learning you do at your own pace, including:

  • Video lectures and demonstrations
  • Slide packs, audio files, and transcripts
  • Reading and research
  • Buddy practice work — 1–2 hours per week with another student
  • Reflective tasks

You access everything through the Counselling Tutor virtual learning environment. Materials are available 24/7 from any device.

Live tutor-led sessions (full days, fortnightly)

Six full-day live sessions, every two weeks, on Zoom. You can join either a Tuesday cohort or a Saturday cohort. Sessions run from 10am to 4pm.

Live time is spent on:

  • Tutor demonstrations of supervision skills
  • Breakout-room practice in triads with tutor observation
  • Personalised feedback
  • Discussion of complex case material
  • Q&A and consolidation

A pre-course headstart

You get access to the self-directed learning portal at least two weeks before live sessions begin — so you can read into the material at your own pace before the cohort gathers.

A non-compulsory introductory session

Around 90–95% of students attend a short, optional introductory session before the course begins. It's not part of the curriculum — it was added in response to feedback about the difficulty of "cold starts." It's a chance to meet your peers and tutors, ask questions about pacing, and feel grounded before you start.

Why this design

The flipped classroom model takes the most valuable thing — live time with experienced tutors and peers — and uses it for the work that has to be done together: practising the skill, watching it modelled, getting feedback. The reading and the videos can be done alone. The supervision practice can't be.
