How supervised hours are worked out

At a Glance

A supervision session records two separate things: how long the supervision lasted, and which client work it covered. The second is set by the From and To dates on the booking, and it decides which of your client hours count as supervised.

Client work taken to this session

When you book clinical supervision you will see a section called Client work taken to this session, with a From and a To date.

TherapyLock fills them in for you:

  • From starts the day after your last clinical supervision
  • To is the date of this session

Both are editable, so you can cover whatever period you actually discussed.

A worked example

Say you have 90 minutes of clinical supervision on the 20th, and you want it to cover the whole of that month.

  1. Book the session for the 20th, set the length to 1 hour 30 minutes, and choose Clinical
  2. Under Client work taken to this session, set From to the 1st of the month and To to the last day of the month
  3. Save, and mark it attended once it has happened

Every client hour in that month now counts as supervised. Your next supervision will start its period from the 1st of the following month, so there are no gaps and no overlaps.

The 90 minutes is recorded as your clinical supervision hours. The covered period is what decides which client hours are supervised. They are two different numbers and both appear in your figures and in the downloadable log.

Clinical and managerial are counted differently

Clinical supervision is what counts towards your supervised client hours.

Managerial supervision is recorded and shown separately. It is part of your practice, and it is not what a professional body means when it asks about clinical supervision.

Sessions attended is not the same as client hours

These two figures measure different things, and it is worth knowing which one you need.

  • Client hours is your total time with clients. It includes anything you entered through Previous hours
  • Sessions attended is the number of appointments marked as attended in TherapyLock within the dates you have selected

They come apart for two reasons.

Session lengths vary. A client who can only manage 30 minutes one week is still one session attended, and half an hour of client time.

Previous hours are a total, not a list of sessions. When you add work done before you joined TherapyLock, you enter it as a single figure. It adds to your hours and it cannot add to your session count, because there are no individual sessions behind it.

For accreditation, the figure you will usually need is your total client hours. If that is right and your sessions attended looks low, nothing is wrong. Sessions attended simply grows from the point you started recording sessions in TherapyLock.
