I have a Level 2 or Level 3 — which of your training is right for me?

At a Glance

Our CPD courses are not suitable at Level 2 or Level 3. They all need you to be at diploma level, which is Level 4 or above, and to be seeing clients in placement. The Student Library is the part of Counselling Tutor built for where you are now.

Why the courses are not open yet

Our courses, including Trauma-Informed Practice, Working Therapeutically with Autistic Clients, and Online and Telephone Counselling, all ask for the same two things:

  • A counselling or psychotherapy qualification at diploma level (Level 4) or above, or working towards one
  • Currently seeing clients as part of a placement

Both matter for the same reason. The courses teach you to do something different with clients you are already working with. Without a caseload, there is nowhere to put the learning, and the course would cost you money without giving you much back yet.

Worth saying plainly: none of our courses is a Level 4 qualification, and none of them is a substitute for one. They are CPD, taken alongside or after core training rather than instead of it.

What is right for you now

The Student Library. It is built for counselling students at every stage, from Level 2 introductory courses through to degrees and masters, and it is where most people at your point start with us.

Inside you will find lectures on counselling theory and skills, help with assignments and academic writing, and a large student community.

Free material as well. The Counselling Tutor Podcast and our YouTube channel are both free, with hundreds of hours on theory, skills and practice. Many students use them throughout their training without paying for anything.

If you were turned down for Level 4

Being told you are not ready is a hard thing to hear, and it is more common than it looks from the outside.

Colleges usually want to see evidence of reading and reflection, and some understanding of what the work actually asks of you. Deepening your theory and keeping up your own reflective practice is the ground most of that is built on, and it is exactly what the Student Library is for.

We cannot tell you what a particular college wants, and it is worth asking them directly what they would need to see from you next time. They will usually tell you.

Come back to the courses later

Once you are on a diploma and seeing clients in placement, the courses open up to you, and quite a few students take one at that point rather than waiting until they qualify.
